The Studio Museum in Harlem The Studio Museum in Harlem is the nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally, and internationally, and for work that has been inspired and influenced by Black culture. The Museum was founded in 1968 by a diverse group who envisioned a new kind of museum that would exhibit artwork, as well as connect, strengthen, and support artists and their communities. Barkley L. Hendricks Painter and photographer Barkley L. Hendricks (b. Philadelphia, PA, 1945; d. New Haven, CT, 2017) delighted and inspired generations of art lovers and fellow artists with his chic, life-sized paintings of urban Black Americans. Riotous with color, Hendricks’s paintings capture the exuberant style and humanity of his neighbors, friends, family, and the people he met throughout his travels. His effortlessly cool portraits elevated everyday individuals to the level of royalty or divinity, simultaneously correcting the absence of Black subjects in the art historical record. The Barkley L. Hendricks Collection The Barkley L. Hendricks Collection by The Studio Museum in Harlem offers exclusive, limited-edition designs that bring the power and beauty of Barkley L. Hendricks’s images into the hands and homes of art lovers everywhere. Reflecting the full scope of Hendricks’s achievement, from portraits to landscapes, this Collection furthers the Studio Museum’s commitment to preserving the legacy of this important artist and advancing Black art and design.
